Parliament is set to hold a special sitting to pay tribute to Ngora District Woman Member of Parliament (MP) Stella Apolot Isodo, who passed away over the weekend.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among says the House is expected to convene on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, to honour Apolot’s life and service.
Among's announcement was made at President Yoweri Museveni’s home in Rwakitura on Sunday, January 18. During the meeting, Among asked for a moment of silence and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.
Ngora district remains in shock following Apolot’s sudden death on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Kampala Hospital, just two days after she lost her re-election bid.
The burial programme, organised by the Parliament of Uganda on behalf of her family, begins on Tuesday, January 20, with a parliamentary session at 2:00pm, followed by a vigil at her home in Namugongo.
A funeral service will be held at the Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) Church in Soroti on Wednesday, January 21, at 11:00am. Another vigil is planned for Osigiria Village in Ngora town council on Thursday, with burial scheduled at the family’s ancestral home on Friday, January 23, starting at 10:00am.
A huge loss
An Anglican cleric from Ongino Church of Uganda Archdeaconry, the Rev. Canon Julius Ongodia, described Apolot’s passing as a huge loss to the people of Ngora and the wider Teso sub-region.
Apolot, who represented the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, lost the recent election to National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Josephine Pedun, who garnered 17,010 votes against Apolot’s 11,334.
Ngora County MP Juliet Achayo Lodou confirmed Apolot’s death, noting that she had been receiving intensive care at Kampala Hospital following a period of illness.
FDC president Patrick Amuriat said Apolot had undergone specialised treatment abroad last year and returned during the campaign period with hopes of recovery.
“Even without actively campaigning, she secured over 11,000 votes. She would not have lost the seat if she were not sick,” Amuriat said.
Soroti City Speaker Juliet Agonyo described Apolot as a committed leader who related closely with her constituents.
“It’s a tragic moment for her family, especially coming just after the burial of her stepbrother on January 18,” Agonyo said.
During her career, Apolot served as spokesperson of the Teso Parliamentary Group and was widely regarded as a passionate advocate for development in Ngora and the wider Teso sub-region.
Born on October 25, 1974, Stella Apolot Isodo’s death leaves a leadership void in Ngora as community members and political colleagues mourn the loss of a dedicated public servant.
