The National Drug Authority (NDA) has closed 15 illegal drug outlets and impounded 190 boxes of assorted medicines worth over sh50m in a compliance enforcement operation conducted across the West Nile region.

The week-long operation covered Adjumani, Arua, Moyo, Koboko and Paidha Town Council in Zombo district.

In a statement issued on Tuesday (August 18), NDA said the affected outlets were operating without licences or qualified personnel.

Police cases were registered against three pharmacies accused of operating without valid licences.

They include Zyphar Pharmacy in Adjumani town, owned by Hamis Yusuf, whose case was registered at Adjumani Central Police Station (CPS); Akubus Pharmaceuticals on Hothi Road in Moyo district, owned by Akule Patrick, with a case registered at Moyo CPS; and Cinya Pharmacy on Transport Road in Koboko district, owned by Odong Daniel, whose case was registered at Koboko CPS.

NDA said the operation was part of its mandate to protect public health through the regulation of human and animal medicines and other healthcare products.

The authority warned that medicines obtained from illegal or unlicensed outlets could be substandard, expired, falsified, adulterated or poorly stored and handled.

According to NDA, such medicines expose the public to risks including treatment failure, irrational drug use, antimicrobial resistance and other adverse health outcomes.

NDA directed operators of unlicensed outlets and those employing unqualified personnel to halt operations until they fulfil licensing requirements.

It also urged the public to purchase medicines only from licensed pharmacies and drug shops and report illegal drug-related activities to the authority.
