Namisindwa man kills wife over meat

"She had returned home, but her mother advised her to go back to her husband and raise her children. She had four children, all boys. Little did we know she was going back to meet her death,” Tsemuko said.

NAMISINDWA - It was a dark day for the residents of Bukitongo B village, Butemulani Parish, Bumwoni sub-county in Namisindwa district, when 28-year-old Sharon Nelima was hacked to death by her husband Rogers Kuremu, 32.

What started as a small quarrel ended up in the murder of Nelima over allegedly cooking omena (silverfish) instead of meat for supper. The neighbours were alerted by the couple's 10-year-old son about the death.

According to the couple's neighbour, Michael Matumbayi, there had been constant misunderstandings between Nelima and her husband over spending October and December at her parents’ home.

“We thought they had reconciled and come together for the good of their children, but we were shocked when we heard of the sad news. By the time we reached their home to rescue her, Nelima had died and Kuremu had already fled the scene,” Matumbayi said.
According to Nelima’s father, John Tsemuko, his daughter 'had always complained about her husband’s habit of drinking and starting unnecessary fights'.

"She had returned home, but her mother advised her to go back to her husband and raise her children. She had four children, all boys. Little did we know she was going back to meet her death,” Tsemuko said.

Police report

Namisindwa district Police commander Richard Richman confirmed the death and said a murder case had been registered unerdCRB 023/25 has been filed at Namisindwa CPS.

Nelima’s burial will take place today at her paternal home in Bunende village, Buyiri Parish, Bumwoni sub-county, Namisindwa district.

Poverty fuelling domestic violence

Namisindwa Women Council chairperson Maimuna Khayongo said it is unfortunate that such a young woman would lose her life in such a manner. She decried men expecting the women to toil for them and provide for the family.

“I have been told that Kuremu returned from drinking, expecting meat for his supper. To his shock, he found omena (silverfish) and posho. This led to a brawl, which resulted in Nelima’s death,” she said.

The fact that the deceased attempted to leave the abusive marriage but returned for the sake of her children means she was unable to fend for them singlehandedly.
