President Yoweri Museveni has officially launched the Mityana Miracle Centre Church Savings and Credit Co-operative Organisation (SACCO). The initiative aims to accelerate wealth creation and improve household incomes.
During a church gathering commemorating the 40th anniversary of the church in Mityana on May 27, 2025, President Museveni praised church lead Pastor Johnson Makumbi, for this significant initiative.
He emphasised that a culture of saving is essential for the economic development of any society and encouraged the public to set aside a portion of their income for the future.
“I am glad that the Church has adopted this strategy, moving away from an undesirable culture of consumption,” President Museveni said in a message delivered by Lands minister Judith Nabakooba. He also contributed shillings 10 million to the SACCO.
Commended
The President commended the congregation for supporting government program mes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), which allocates shillings one million to each household to alleviate poverty, as well as the Emyooga initiative.
He reiterated that these programmes are designed to eradicate poverty at the household level and called on the public to engage with them.
“Poverty in Uganda is mainly due to subsistence farming, and we have established wealth creation funds to integrate the 37 per cent of households still engaged in such farming,” he stated.
The main service was led by Kampala city-based Miracle Centre Cathedral senior Pastor Robert Kayanja. The President also acknowledged Pastor Kayanja and the community for their continued support of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government, urging them to maintain this spirit to preserve the NRM’s achievements in peace, democracy, unity and socio-economic transformation.
Kayanja expressed gratitude to the President for his thoughtful ministerial appointments, highlighting that since Nabakooba took office, there has been significant progress in addressing land disputes.
He thanked the minister for her dedication to helping the underprivileged, particularly in the north, who are now receiving land titles under the NRM government.
“Since I was born, I had never seen a northerner with a land title. With this government, many have gained full ownership of their land,” Kayanja noted, acknowledging the efforts to ensure peaceful land settlement.
Promoting mechanised agriculture
Makumbi appealed to the President to provide each district with a tractor to promote mechanised agriculture, stating that most of the congregation still relies on outdated farming methods that are labour-intensive.
“Mechanised agriculture is essential for boosting our agricultural production,” he urged, asking Minister Nabakooba to convey this message to the President.
Regarding job creation, Makumbi prayed for the establishment of a skilling centre on government land in Kyamusisi village, as many youths are currently unable to attend school due to a lack of funds for education.
Nabakooba assured the audience that she would relay this message to the President. She urged them to maintain their trust in President Museveni as he prepares for the next term of office (2026-2031), noting that he understands the people's challenges and will continue to work on transforming their lives.
She added that land conflicts are often fuelled by greed, ignorance and corruption, encouraging the public to address these issues to resolve land disputes.
“This issue is most prevalent in Buganda, where verbal agreements made by our grandparents are often disregarded,” she said.
Nabakooba promised to continue supporting the underprivileged in land matters, explaining that many landlords refuse to accept annual ground rent, known as Busuulu. She assured residents that a dedicated account has been created for these payments.
“Don’t worry about this because my permanent secretary has already resolved the issue. Just ensure you pay the rent, and no one will evict you, as we have laws in place to protect you,” she said.
