The Uganda-Russia relations

Uganda and Russia have a good working relationship on trade. Uganda exports goods such as coffee and tea to Russia, while it imports several goods, including aircraft, spacecraft, machinery, electronics and vehicles from Russia.

Russia, formerly the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), established diplomatic relations with Uganda on October 11–12, 1962.

In 1964, the USSR and Uganda signed a trade agreement on economic and technical co-operation and established dynamic political dialogue.

Russia in August last year announced military support to Uganda, following a visit to Russia by Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba in May.

During the Russia visit, Kainerugaba met head of the Main Directorate for International Military Cooperation of the Russian Ministry of Defence Lt. Gen. Alexander Kshimovsky. During the meeting, the two parties discussed the situation in Africa, as well as promising areas of Russian-Ugandan military and military-technical co-operation.

Both parties agreed that they needed to strengthen their partnership in an effort to ensure regional security and stability.

Uganda is involved in peace missions in the region including contributing troops to the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia.

Ugandan troops are also carrying out joint operations with Democratic Republic of Congo troops to fight the Allied Democratic Forces rebels, a branch of the Islamic State in Central Africa.
