Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 2031 Presidential bid that was launched by the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) leadership, has received over 5,200 political endorsements in one day.

Muhoozi, the Chief of Defence Forces, PLU chairperson and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, took to his social media platform X account on Tuesday (September 8) to express his gratitude for the support.

“I thank the thousands of our great citizens who have already endorsed our campaign so far. Yesterday (Monday), over 5,200 citizens affixed their signatures to the endorsement books at one of our offices,” he said.

The four-star general, who is known in political circles by his initials MK, also said they are determined to uphold President Yoweri Museveni’s great legacy and achieve their development goals.

On August 25, 2026, Muhoozi announced that he would stand for the highest office in the land in 2031 and that he and his PLU supporters would win by the grace of the Almighty God.

“From now until 2031, I want our great PLU to carry out endorsement rallies in the 146 districts of Uganda. We want all our people with us when we stand! We want 90% of the vote,” he added in another X post.

He also declared that President Museveni would be his campaign manager in 2031. “With my great father, Mzee’s support, I will get 90% in the elections in 2031.”

Muhoozi had moved in a subterranean fashion for over two decades before his supporters started the MK Movement in April 2022 to appreciate his military service and those of his comrades.

The MK Movement morphed into PLU in February 2024 as a civic organisation to mobilise Ugandans towards the goal of national unity, peace and stability.

On September 1, 2026, PLU launched a campaign for 20 million endorsement signatures for his presidential bid and stated that this was sanctioned by the President himself.

According to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Act, Gen. Muhoozi will have to retire from the army if he is to join elective politics.

Section 99 of the UPDF Act stipulates: "A serving officer or militant who desires to seek political office shall first resign or retire from the defence forces according to regulations made by the minister (of defence).”
