Mother, daughter crashed to death by fast-moving truck in Iganga

IGANGA - A mother and her two-year-old child were instantly killed after a motorcycle they were riding on got involved in a fatal crash with a sugarcane truck along the Iganga-Jinja Highway.
The crash occurred at about 8:00pm on 10th/ Sept/2026 at Walugogo near Ntinda Hotel junction in Iganga district.
Busoga East regional police spokesperson Michael Kasadha identified the deceased as Halima Babirye, 25 years old, and her two-year-old child, Rida Bakulimya.
The crash, he added, involved a white Tata lorry with registration numbers UBD 671Y/UBD 672Y, which was loaded with sugarcane and a red Haojue motorcycle with registration number UGE 889F.
Initial investigations indicate that both the vehicle and motorcycle were travelling from Iganga towards Jinja when the cyclist, with the two passengers on his bike, attempted to rejoin the main road from the pedestrian walkway.
“The cyclist reportedly lost control of the motorcycle and fell off the road. The woman and her child were thrown onto the highway where they were run over by the approaching sugarcane truck,” he said, adding that the two victims died instantly at the scene.
He said the motorcycle cyclist and the lorry driver reportedly fled before the arrival of police, prompting investigations to establish their whereabouts.
A team from the Iganga Police staty police, led by ASP officer in charge of traffic Bedah Katureebe, visited the scene and conducted preliminary investigations.
A sketch plan was drawn while both the motorcycle and lorry were towed to the Iganga Police parking yard pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.
At the time of filing this report, the bodies were still at Iganga Main Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

He warned boda boda cyclists against using pedestrian walkways and putting the lives of their clients at risk.
He also cautioned road users to observe traffic rules and prioritise the safety of passengers and other road users, particularly along busy highways.
According to the 2025 annual police crime report, a total of 26,044 road traffic crashes were reported compared to 25,107 in 2024, showing an increase of 3.7%, while fatal accidents increased from 4,434 in 2024 to 4,602 in 2025.
