Missing Police boss identified among 8 dead crash victims

The body of a senior Police officer, attached to Kitagwenda Police, who has been missing since February 13, 2026, has been identified among the eight victims of the tragic accident that also claimed the life of Next Media journalist Julius Kitone.

At the time of his death, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alex Nuwamanya, according to his relatives, has been operating as Kitagwenda Police Station Officer in charge in Kitagwenda district.

“We have looked for him for close to a week, and no one could tell his whereabouts until we heard that he was among the eight people who perished in the Mbarara-Lyantonde road crash, one of them had not yet been identified. So, we went to the mortuary on Tuesday (February 17) morning, only to find him lying in the mortuary,” one of the relatives said.

Nuwamanya joined the Uganda Police Force (UPF) as a cadet officer in 2014 at the Masindi-based Police Training School.

During the recently concluded election campaigns, he was among the few selected officers who welcomed President Yoweri Museveni as he traversed the district.

According to the deceased’s widow, Murungi, the deceased will be laid to rest today, February 18, at his home in Kitookye, Kashari County, Mbarara district.

According to Rwizi Police regional spokesperson Samson Kasasira, the crash occurred at about 6:30pm at Kibega I village on the Mbarara-Lyantonde highway, involving a white Toyota Hiace (Drone) and a Mercedes-Benz Actros.

Kasasira attributed the crash to reckless driving.  Police identified other victims as Onesmas Agaba,45; Bosco Ajidra from Maracha district; Julius Kitone (journalist); Abdu Sserugo from Nsangi, Wakiso district; Victor Musinguzi,30, a resident of Ibanda; Godfrey Lukyamuzi of Kinono-Lwengo district-(drone driver) and Charles Otaki, 49, from Oyam district.

According to Police, this was the second crash involving a taxi that claimed lives in a space of one week.

The Traffic and Road Safety 2024 Police report indicates that 5,144 people were killed in road crashes in 2024, compared to 4,806 who perished in the year, 2023 and 4,534 in 2022.
