KAMPALA - Police say they have arrested the prime suspect involved in the theft of car number plates.

On February 17, 2026, Police said they had arrested Steven Semuju following a viral video by one of the victims whose digital number plates were stolen from his car at home.

Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Rachael Kawala said the suspect was arrested and is being held at Nateete Police Station.

"The Police at Nateete have successfully arrested a suspect involved in the theft of motor vehicle number plates. The suspect has been identified as Semuju, a 33-year-old resident of Busega," Kawala said.

She revealed that during the operation, seven pairs of stolen number plates were recovered, including: UAH 286S, UA 309BQ, UA 682BZ, UAM 277G, UAN 796B, and UBK 264Y.

Explaining the viral video victim's incident, Kawala said, "On the night of February 11, 2026, unknown persons unlawfully entered the compound of Patrick  Lutamaguzi in Busega–Kabale, Rubaga division, Kampala district and stole a number plate from his vehicle, registration number UAN 796B, a silver Toyota Opa."

She said in a bizarre twist, the suspect left behind a contact number (0759-353167) written on the vehicle, which later became a crucial lead in the investigations.

"Following arrest, the suspect led security agencies to locations where the stolen number plates had been hidden, in the areas of Busega–Kabale and  Kiteemu Kivulu Kyengera town council, Wakiso District," Kawala added.

She said the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue, and he will be charged in court accordingly.
