Minister calls for registration of life events
Kamuntu urged every Ugandan to join hands with NIRA to ensure that everyone is registered, saying a comprehensive population database is key to national planning and the implementation of development programmes.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, has urged Ugandans to register important life events as they occur, as part of efforts to help the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) achieve universal registration and provide citizens with the relevant documents. In his opening remarks at the My Identity Expo and Symposium 2026 at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu said NIRA has so far registered more than 36.2 million people, accounting for 78.8% of the total population.
He urged every Ugandan to join hands with NIRA to ensure that everyone is registered, saying a comprehensive population database is key to national planning and the implementation of development programmes. Kamuntu cited programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), GROW and Emyooga, which require reliable population data to support planning and implementation.

He also encouraged Ugandans to register births, marriages and other important life events as they occur so that the relevant records and documents can be obtained.
The My Identity Expo and Symposium 2026, organised by NIRA, started today and will run until October 1. The expo is sponsored by Bank of Uganda, MTN Uganda, URA, KCCA, NITA-U and Tahaluf.
