BUSIA - Police are investigating the circumstances in which a miner died after falling into a mining shaft at
Tiira trading centre on December 14, 2025.

Alex Bigirimana reportedly slipped and fell moments after electricity was restored following a power outage at the site.

Bukedi South Police region spokesperson Moses Mugwe said Bigirimana was re-entering the shaft when he lost balance and fell, dying instantly.

Police have since visited and documented the scene, and the body was taken to Busia Health Centre IV for postmortem.

Investigators identified the pit owner as Raymond Kyambande, with the land belonging to Yahaya Okoroi, and noted that the shaft operates under the licence of Busia United.

Police warned that deaths in mining shafts are becoming increasingly common, renewing calls for stricter enforcement of safety standards and community sensitisation.
