A 38-year-old man is recovering from serious injuries after allegedly being assaulted by his wife during a domestic dispute over sh5 million deposited into her mobile money account under the government’s household restocking initiative.
Emma Ocen, a father of two and resident of Oguru East village in Pukony sub-county, Gulu district, reportedly got into a violent disagreement with his wife, Beatrice Ajok, last week after asking when they would withdraw the money to purchase two bulls and three heifers as required under the programme.
According to reports, Ajok became angry and declined to explain when the money would be withdrawn, leading to a heated argument that later turned physical.
During the altercation, Ajok allegedly picked up a wooden hoe handle that Ocen had recently bought to fix onto a hoe and struck him on the jaw. The blow reportedly knocked him unconscious and left him with a deep cut.
Anthony Opiro, the chairperson of Oguru East village, said the matter was not officially reported to his office because the family opted to handle it internally.
According to the Gulu District Production Department, 274 of the 329 households selected to benefit in the first phase of the restocking initiative have already received the sh5 million grant.
However, 55 households have not yet received their payments because the names on their national identification documents do not match the registered mobile phone numbers.
The affected beneficiaries have been advised to update their registration details using phone numbers registered in their own names before the funds can be released.
