Man arrested for allegedly defiling 4-year-old girl in Kasese

Police in Bwera division, Kasese district, have arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of defiling a four-year-old girl.
The suspect, identified as Kelvin Mumbere of Buswagha village, Mughete parish, Kitabu subcounty, allegedly lured the child away from a group of children playing near her home on the evening of July 22 by promising to buy her bread.
According to Rwenzori East Region police spokesperson Elly Maate, the suspect took the girl to an isolated spot behind an old house, where he assaulted her before telling her to return home. The child disclosed what had happened to her mother, who alerted police.
Officers traced and arrested the suspect shortly afterwards. Police say investigations into the case are continuing.

The case comes amid persistent concerns over the safety of children in Uganda.
The Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2025 shows that aggravated defilement remains one of the major crimes affecting children, with 3,473 cases registered in 2025 compared to 4,072 in 2024.
The report further shows that children were defiled by different categories of offenders, including guardians, teachers and other individuals, highlighting the continued vulnerability of minors to sexual violence.
Police have continued to encourage parents, guardians and communities to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of child abuse to authorities.
