Prison warder Moses Anguyo, who turned his gun on his own colleagues on February 23 this year, killing four of them, has been sentenced to death.
This was after he pleaded guilty to murdering his boss, Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Catherine Hope, Bright Akishuri, Sarah Ayebare and Salson Niwagaba.
Sentencing him to death on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, High Court judge Jane Okuo Kajuga said Anguyo breached the trust of a trained prisons officer entrusted with a firearm when he killed the four.
“I find that the aggravating factors outweighed the mitigating factors, including the guilty plea. I, therefore, sentence you to death on each count of murder,” Kajuga ruled.
Kajuga said the sentence is a solemn reminder of the seriousness with which the law treats the taking of a human life and violent criminal conduct.
Prosecution said on February 23 this year, at Kiboga hospital road in Kiwanguzi cell in Kiboga town council, with malice aforethought, Anguyo unlawfully caused the death of Hope, Akishuri, Ayebare and Niwagaba.
The evidence
According to the summary of the case, on February 23 this year, Anguyo was issued with a gun registration no. UGPOL 565824781-32635 with 30 live ammunition, which he received by signing the armoury book. Prosecution said that at about 9:30am, Superintendent of Prisons Ivan Niwagaba came to the station and carried out an inspection.
During the inspection, Niwagaba found Anguyo was communicating on his phone and cautioned him because they are not allowed to use the phones. However, Anguyo ignored his boss.
Consequently, Niwagaba called Hope, who was the deputy in charge and they talked to him.
When Anguyo ignored them, they replaced him with another warder only identified as Karakire. They ordered Anguyo to hand over the gun to Karakire. However, he turned violent and aimed the gun at Niwagaba, prompting him to run away.
After killing Hope, the prosecution said Anguyo ran to Niwagaba’s car and killed his wife and their son.
He also killed his colleague, Akishuri, who had come to respond to the shooting.

After moving for a short distance, prosecution said he removed the prisons uniform and wore the Arsenal jersey and the trouser and took off.
Prosecution said Anziku sent Anguyo sh60,000 using a mobile money agent in Masindi town, which enabled him to travel to Arua, where he lived with his other brother Okuonzi, who later connected him to their brother who was working on a farm in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Later, Anguyo was later tracked by the security agencies, arrested and brought back into Uganda to face trial.
Prosecution alleges that Amviko remained in constant communication with him but failed to disclose his whereabouts.
