The last council meeting of Kaberamaido district, presided over by its outgoing speaker, James Kennedy Eisu Ojiji, has recognised key leaders.
The LC5 of Kaberamaido, Victor Rex Ekesu, while presenting the names of leaders for special recognition, said it was important to honour the group, including those who bowed out of the council race in the recent national elections.
The last council meeting of May 7, 2026, also recognised the efforts of the NRM government through President Yoweri Museveni for making them reach where they are today.
Ekesu enumerated and recognised key people who played key roles in Teso and the entire country of Uganda.
So far, six other districts have been created out of the initial Soroti district. These include: Katakwi, Kaberamaido, Amuria, Serere, Kalaki and Kapelebyong
Who are the people that Kaberamaido council recognised and why?
The late bishop of Soroti catholic diocese, Desderius Wandera and his counterpart of Soroti Anglican Church, Geresome Ilukor.
The two were recognised for having the church during the difficult times of insurgency and serving the people of Teso, including Kaberamaido, with humanity.
Ekesu said during the insurgency in Teso, the two bishops played key roles in providing clothes, food and spreading the messages of love, reconciliation and forgiveness.
More leaders recognised:
Minister of state for works, Musa Ecweru and former Member of Parliament of Kaberamaido, John Elyanu Eresu. The council recognised the two for helping secure the arrow boys who fought alongside UPDF to flush the LRA rebels out of Teso.
Former minister of state of finance, Robert Ekinu, who was killed by UPA rebels in 1987 alongside minister Justus Aporu Okol, while on a peace mission in Teso.
Minister of Teso affairs, Clement Kenneth Ongalo Obote, who is a member of parliament of Kalaki.
Captain Mike Mukula was recognised for having played a key role in the creation of Kaberamaido district.
Robert Engulu, former councillor LC5 Soroti district.
Florence Akullo, a councillor representing the female older persons.
Soroti councillors hailing from Kaberamaido enclave who were rewarded include: Joe Emusu Ediegu Joe, John Willy Ejwau, Immaculate Ilado and the LC5 elect, Albert Anthony Ejoku.
