Uganda is today, May 5, 2026, expected to receive a much-needed ambulances and fire trucks donation from Japan. The development is expected to enhance the country's emergency medical and disaster response capacity in various cities and districts.

The event expected to take place at the health ministry headquarters in Kampala city will see Japanese ambassador to Uganda Sasayama Takuya hand over second-hand emergency vehicles from Japan in the presence of health minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng and the representative of the Uganda Police Force.

The total grant for these two projects funded under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) amounts to $ 936,095 (about shillings 3.37 billion). GGP is a scheme administered by the Embassy of Japan to support community-based development projects and was initiated in 1992. Now, the total number of projects supported under the GGP scheme has reached 296 covering all parts of Uganda.

According to a statement from the embassy, the 17 second-hand ambulances worth $415,335 will go to two cities and 15 districts, including Oyam, Mbale city, Nebbi, Apac, Luuka, Masindi, Lira, Mityana, Ibanda, Bushenyi, Lyantonde, Kabale, Pallisa, Hoima, Busia and Buikwe.

Under the $520,760 Project for Provision of Second-hand Ambulances and Fire Trucks in two cities and 11 districts, the health ministry will get six second-hand ambulances, while the Uganda Police Force will receive seven second-hand fire trucks.

"These emergency vehicles will be distributed across two cities and 11 districts, strengthening disaster response and medical emergency services in Kampala, Lira City, Gomba, Rakai, Luuka, Rwampara, Kapchorwa, Mpigi, Tororo, Luweero, Bundibugyo, Iganga, and Kiryandongo," the statement issued early this month says.
