Uganda Police Force detectives are investigating the death of Islam Poni, a Bangladeshi citizen, whose body was discovered in a guest house in Yumbe town.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at around 7:00 am.

Islam Poni 54 was working with WKK company limited, a sub-contractor for the tarmacking of the 11.54km Yumbe-Jure road funded by the Japanese Government.

His body was discovered on Saturday at the Ruvana Inn Hotel.

The police spokesperson for North West Nile region, SP Collins Asea, confirmed that a case of sudden death had been opened at Yumbe Central Police Station under the reference YUMBE REF 002/202602/05/2026.

Quoting preliminary investigations, Asea said, “Poni booked a room at around 1600hours on (Friday) May 1, 2026. While in the room, he was later joined by an unidentified woman.”

He notes that the CCTV camera footage from the hotel shows the lady left before 6:00 pm, leaving the man alone in the room.

“In the morning of Saturday at around 07:00 hours, one of the waiters reported to a colleague about continuous unanswered phone ringing in the room,” Asea said.

He said the waitress notified Lillian Obiru, the cashier at the hotel, who also informed the hotel manager, Jamirah Racheal, and later, the information reached the proprietor of the hotel, Robert Asega.

He revealed that a group of senior managers investigating the report went to the room where they discovered a lifeless man on the bed.

"The police received the information from the proprietor of the hotel and acted swiftly. The scene of the crime was visited, examined and documented, led by Homicide Desk," he said.

A form PF48A was issued for the body to be examined at Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital to determine the cause of his death.

"Statements from witnesses at the scene were recorded, and exhibits recovered from the scene, secured and documented. No arrests have been made at this time," Asea further revealed.

‘He didn’t register’

Robert Asega, the proprietor of the hotel, said the deceased declined to document his details at the booking office, saying that his stay would be brief.

"We informed him that we do not offer half-day accommodations, so he opted to pay for a full night. Unfortunately, he did not register right away, telling my staff that he needed to take a shower first and would register afterwards," Asega explained.

He added that a few minutes later, the man invited a female visitor to his room. "Since the customer had already paid for the entire night, the staff chose to respect his decision and did not want to intervene," he said.

However, Asega mentioned that it remains unclear whether the man passed away while the woman was still there or after she had left.
