Over 150 female human rights defenders and advocates have discussed issues that continue to impede women from enjoying their rights.

This was at the Seventh annual Women’s Human Rights Defenders conference organised by the Human Rights Centre Uganda (HRCU) in partnership with Defend Defenders and Phenomenal Women Global (PWG). It was held at Golf Course Hotel in Kampala on November 26, 2024, under the theme: Invest in her: Accelerate Progress.

Panelists discussed how to break the silence on the psychological impacts of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and examined the connection between women’s mental health and SGBV.

There was also a discussion on the role of women in shaping cultural norms and traditions while driving progressive change.

Others deliberated on empowering women in the digital era, investing in women's leadership and promoting entrepreneurship and innovation.

The Nnabagereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda was the chief guest and participants, included former finance minister, Maria Kiwanuka, lawyers, educationists, health workers, Harvard Kennedy School alumnae, politicians and Royal Danish embassy representatives led by Kirstine Primdal Sutton.

Nnabagereka called upon leaders, policymakers and all stakeholders to invest more in women and girls.

She advocated for initiatives that promote the economic empowerment of women such as agriculture and agro-processing. She also highlighted the need for access to affordable finance for women entrepreneurs, enabling them to start and grow their own businesses. Add to that investment in innovative technologies that ease the daily work of women.

Women should also have access to trainings and opportunities to enable them become self-reliant and influential members of their communities. This in turn empowers them to become beacons; promoting and defending women’s rights.

Nnabagereka commended HRCU for the tremendous work they do in advancing the rights of women and girls saying; “Your dedication to advocating for equality and social justice is inspiring and crucial in creating a more equitable society.”

HRCU executive director, Margaret Sekaggya, thanked the Nnabagereka for her relentless efforts in empowering women and youth while promoting their rights through the Nnaabagereka Development Foundation (NDF). She added that the event aimed at celebrating the remarkable achievements of women in Uganda and also address the critical challenges they face as agents for change, champions of social justice, and leaders in their communities.

In the same vein, Liza Sekaggya founder of Phenomenal Woman Global implored stakeholders to also address systemic inequalities and ensure that all women regardless of their background, race, or origin have equal opportunities to thrive. No woman should be overlooked, excluded or left behind which is in line with Sustainable Development Goal Five (SDG5) on Gender Equality.

Meanwhile, Nnabagereka received a plaque and gifts from HRCU and PWG in appreciation of her efforts in promoting women rights.
