Family is the root of heritage and strengthening it through marriage is necessary for posterity, Buganda Kingdom premier (Katikkiro) Charles Peter Mayiga has said.

“Our heritage is rooted in the family and strengthening [it] through marriage is necessary for our posterity. There are, of course, challenges in marriage, but what is of value that isn’t challenging?” Mayiga asked.

He made the remarks on Sunday, December 17, during the 25th marriage anniversary thanksgiving service for Dr Jeff Sebuyira and Dr Lydia Sebuyira at their residence in Mutungo, Kampala.

The service was led by Church of Uganda Archbishop Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, who also led the couple to renew their marriage vows.

Queen of Buganda (Nnabagereka) Sylvia Nagginda also celebrated the Sebuyiras’ 25 years of marriage and thanked them for bringing up their children well. The couple met in Primary Three at Nakasero Primary School in Kampala and say they have been happily married.

They are both members of the Nnabagereka Development Foundation Board. Lydia is a sister to a seasoned lawyer and Buganda Kingdom minister for lands and properties, David Mpanga.

The archbishop also congratulated the couple upon making it to their silver jubilee marriage anniversary and thanked them for being able to work through their marriage challenges together.

Sebuyira, who holds a doctorate in business leadership from the University of South Africa, is the chief executive officer of Imprint (U) Ltd, a certified capacity-building organisation. He is also the chairperson of the board of directors of the International Medical Group and a non-executive director of DFCU Bank.

His wife is a clinical associate professor in the Department of global health at the University of Washington and a Ugandan member of the Academic Alliance for Care and Prevention of HIV in Africa. She holds a medical degree, a bachelor’s 7degree in Physiological Sciences, and a master’s degree from Oxford University.
