Two staff members of Luwero General Hospital have been arrested and detained over an alleged extortion case involving a domestic violence victim who was reportedly denied treatment because she had no money.
According to Sam Twiineamazima, the police publicist for Savannah Region, the territorial police in Luwero district are investigating the incident, which allegedly occurred on July 15, 2026, at around 2:00 pm at the hospital.
Twiineamazima said the matter traces back to July 14, 2026, when a domestic violence victim with a cut on her right leg was brought to the hospital’s emergency ward but was reportedly not attended to because she lacked money for treatment.
The following day, hospital staff allegedly demanded sh700,000 from the victim's brother, whose name has been withheld, before they could treat her. Unable to raise the full amount, the brother managed to get sh300,000, which he handed over to the suspects.

Immediately after receiving the money, the two hospital staff members were arrested and searched, police said. Their identities have been withheld.
The cash was subsequently recovered from one of the suspects and has been exhibited as evidence in the case.
The two suspects, both hospital employees, have since been detained at Luwero Central Police Station as a case of extortion has been formally registered against them.
Police said investigations into the matter are ongoing and that further action will follow in accordance with the law.
