The Government has underscored the importance of digital innovation in Uganda's legal sector with a call to law firms to increasingly embrace technology to improve service delivery.

The Minister of State for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Margaret Muhanga, made the call while launching a digital information management system for Kalikumutima and Company Advocates at it's offices in Kampala during the firm's celebration of 10 years of legal practice held on October 20.

The system is intended to improve case management, operational efficiency, accountability and client service delivery, marking a step towards integrating technology into their legal operations.

The launch comes amid growing demand for efficient, transparent and client-centred legal services, with digital tools offering law firms opportunities to improve how they manage information and serve clients.

The law firm's Chief Executive Partner, Deo Kalikumutima, said the introduction of the system reflects their commitment to innovation and responsible business practices as they enter their second decade of operation.

Kalikumutima said the firm's 10-year journey had been shaped by commitment to professional development, mentorship and creating a lasting impact beyond the courtroom.

“When we established this law firm, we resolved that our success would be measured not only by the cases we won, but also by the people we empowered and the lives we transformed,” Kalikumutima said.

He added that more than 200 young lawyers have passed through the firm's mentorship and clerkship programmes over the past decade, describing their professional growth as one of its proudest achievements.

The firm also highlighted the growing role of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles in promoting responsible business practices, ethical leadership, and institutional accountability.

Kalikumutima said the firm was using its anniversary to encourage Ugandan businesses to integrate ESG principles into their operations, moving beyond compliance and reporting towards measurable environmental responsibility and sustainable business practices.

“As we mark 10 years, our ambition is to make ESG understandable, accessible and practical for every Ugandan business,” he said.

He added that the firm's public ESG commitment initiative, launched in September 2026, was attracting participation, while preparations were underway for an ESG training cohort scheduled for January 2027.

The firm has also partnered with the Association of Uganda Family Business Owners (FBAU) to promote family enterprise governance, succession planning and wealth preservation.

It said these efforts were intended to help businesses strengthen themselves and protect their assets for future generations.

Beyond Uganda, the law firm is working with diaspora organisations, including the Ugandan North American Association (UNAA) and the National Alliance of Ugandan Canadian Associations (NAUCA), to promote legal awareness and protect investments by Ugandans living abroad.

The engagements focus on property transactions, inheritance matters, investment structuring and cross-border legal representation, areas that can present challenges for diaspora investors navigating legal processes in Uganda.

Speaking at the anniversary celebration, George Omunyokol, the managing partner of GP Advocates, emphasised the importance of continuous professional development in the legal profession.

“Qualifying to practise law is only the beginning of a life-long learning journey. The profession demands intellectual curiosity, humility and an unwavering commitment to excellence,” Omunyokol said.
