Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation (SACCO) has been recognised among Africa’s top 20 saving organisations (SACCOs) in terms of assets and membership, according to a continental ranking by the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA).

The recognition came during the association's 2026 Congress in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from October 10 to 16. The congress brings together leaders in the cooperative financial sector to exchange experiences, share best practices and explore innovative approaches to strengthening SACCOs across Africa.

With reported total assets of approximately sh1.4 trillion, Wazalendo SACCO continues to expand its financial capacity to mobilise savings, extend credit and improve members’ financial well-being.

Speaking on the significance of the congress, Wazalendo SACCO chairperson Board of Directors, Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma, said the engagement provides an opportunity to benchmark the institution against leading cooperative financial organisations and strengthen its governance and financial sustainability.

“Our participation in the 2026 Congress provides an important opportunity to benchmark Wazalendo SACCO against leading cooperative financial institutions, exchange experiences and learn best practices in governance, financial sustainability and member service. As a Board, we remain committed to providing strategic leadership that strengthens the SACCO’s growth, safeguards members’ savings and advances their financial well-being,” Kavuma said.

He added that continuous learning and effective governance were essential to strengthening institutional resilience and ensuring that the SACCO remained responsive to members’ changing financial needs.

The Wazalendo SACCO Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Yusuf Magero Buha, said the savings organisation would focus on translating lessons and partnerships from the congress into practical improvements in service delivery, digital innovation and operational efficiency.

“The Congress offers a valuable platform for learning, networking and exploring innovative approaches to delivering better financial services to our members. We are committed to translating the knowledge and partnerships gained from this engagement into practical improvements in service delivery, digital innovation and operational efficiency, while ensuring that Wazalendo SACCO continues to grow sustainably and meet the evolving needs of its membership,” Buha said.

He noted that innovation, efficiency and member-centred services remained key priorities as the institution strengthens its operations and expands access to financial services.

The recognition marks a significant milestone for Wazalendo SACCO and Uganda’s cooperative financial sector, reflecting the contributions of its members, Board of Directors, management and staff.

As the cooperative movement continues to evolve across Africa, Wazalendo SACCO remains focused on strengthening its financial position, improving service delivery and promoting members’ financial welfare through responsible financial management and sustainable growth, Buha noted.
