Govt announces February 10 as new date for schools reopening

Because of the general elections and "to ensure the safety of all learners", the reopening date for education institutions has been adjusted.

The Ugandan government has announced February 10, 2026 as the new date for the reopening of all schools and education institutions.

The initial date had been set at February 2, 2026 as per an earlier official announcement by the Ministry of Education and Sports.

But because of the "general elections and to ensure the safety of all learners", the reopening date has been adjusted.

"All schools and education institutions across the country are directed to reopen on Tuesday, February 10, 2026. For avoidance of doubt, this includes all international schools, tertiary institutions and universities," said Dr Kedrace R Turyagyenda, the education ministry permanent secretary, in a statement issued on Friday (January 16).

"Vice-chancellors, principals, headteachers, parents and guardians, school administrators, students  the public are hereby notified that term one for the academic year 2026 runs from Tuesday, February 10, 2026 to Friday, May 1, 2026," she said.

"All school administrators are directed to adhere firmly to these dates and the approved calendar published on the education ministry website."
