Eight arrested over forged documents, bribery in Uganda army recruitment

KAMPALA - Police say they have arrested eight suspects over forgery and bribery during the ongoing Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) recruitment exercise.

Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma says five suspects: David Okurut, Alfred Byaruhanga, Richard Odeke, and John Bosco Oryema, were handed over to Police by UPDF officers at Kitgum Central Police Station after being found with forged academic documents during recruitment in Central Division, Kitgum Municipality.

“We have warned before, do not submit forged documents during any recruitment exercise, whether for UPDF, police or local government,” Kituuma said.

Later that evening, three other suspects, Samuel Okema and Joel Kitara, were arrested for attempting to bribe a recruitment officer with shillings 900,000.

Kituuma said all suspects are in custody and will be charged according to the law.
