Kampala Metropolitan Police have been conducting intensive search operations in the suburbs of Namuwongo and Kitintale in Nakawa Division since March 22, 2026, following an aggravated robbery incident at Punjani roundabout in Kampala.
The incident occurred on March 21, 2026, at about 12:40 pm when a group of four young men attempted to rob businessman Muzafalu Mulindwa while he was stuck in traffic near the former Electoral Commission gate along the route to the city centre.
According to the police report, the suspects approached Mulindwa's vehicle, a Toyota Hybrid with registration number UAB 512CP, brandishing a panga and demanding that he unlock the doors.
When the motorist refused, one of the assailants forcibly removed the vehicle's front grille, drawing the attention of nearby bystanders. The commotion prompted the gang to flee towards a nearby drainage channel.
Police covert teams, who had been monitoring the area, immediately alerted uniformed officers stationed at the railway line in the lower part of the area, a known escape route for criminals operating in the vicinity.
The four suspects, all dressed in black, were spotted emerging from the drainage channel. Officers on motorcycles quickly cornered them and ordered them to stop, but the suspects refused to comply.
In a dramatic confrontation, one of the suspects drew a panga and advanced towards the officers. Police fired warning shots, but the armed suspect continued his advance, forcing officers to shoot him. The remaining three suspects fled back into the drainage channel.
Senior police officials, including the District Police Commander and Officer in Charge of Operations for Kampala Central Police Station, visited the scene. A team from the Scenes of Crime Office (SOCO) and homicide detectives was deployed to process the scene. The body of the deceased suspect was transported to the city mortuary at Mulago Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Police recovered a panga and the stolen vehicle grille at the scene next to the suspect's body.
Authorities have announced continuous covert and overt deployments along the Mukwano roundabout to Punjani stretch with the aim of eliminating criminal elements and activities in the area.
