The Court of Appeal has started hearing 25 cases including that of a woman, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing a Finnish national with a lethal dose of drugs and pesticides for financial gain.

Faridah Nagayi aka Miriam, formerly working as a receptionist in Qatar, was found guilty of poisoning Tuomas Juha Petteri Terasvuori, a Finnish national, resulting in his death.

She committed the offence on February 6, 2018, at Pearl of Africa Hotel, Kampala, and was convicted by High Court judge Margaret Mutonyi.

However, two years after her conviction, Nagayi still pleads her innocence, with her appeal, scheduled for hearing Tomorrow, March 12, 2024.

The two-day session kicked off  on Monday, March 11, 2024, at the Court of Appeal in Kampala presided over by a panel of three Justices led by the Deputy Chief Justice. Other justices are Eva Luswata and Justice Oscar Kihika.

The cause list signed by the court deputy registrar Lillian Bucyana, indicates that the judges will handle 12 murder appeals, 10 for defilement, aggravated trafficking in persons, and aggravated robbery.

The appellants are participating in the court session by way of video conferencing while their advocates are present in court.

The defence lawyers include Mohammed Mbalile, Cranmer Tayebwa, Sheila Kihumuro Musinguzi, Henry Kunya and Shamim Nalule.

The state prosecutors from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions are Immaculate Angutoko, Sam Oola, Winnie Ahimbisibwe, Kawuma Barbara, Joe Aliwaali Kizio, Stella Maries Lunyolo and Joseph Kyomuhendo.
