Bishop Serverus Jjumba of Masaka Diocese has called for peace and stability during and after Uganda's 2026 general election.
In his Christmas Day message at Kitovu Cathedral in Masaka city on Thursday (December 25), Jjumba said the voters must be provided with an enabling environment for them to freely exercise their constitutional right to elect leaders of their choice.
He urged Ugandans to steer clear of political violence, hooliganism and any forms of electoral malpractice.
Jjumba also mentioned the embattled Rev Fr Deusdedit Ssekabira, who is on remand in prison over charges related to money laundering.
“We must thank God and appreciate all those who have prayed for Fr Ssekabira to be produced in court, and I know that justice will prevail. The truth will come out."
The Member of Parliament for Nyendo-Mukungwe and former Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, and other laity leaders in Masaka Diocese decried the manner in which Ssekabira was arrested.
“They should have informed Bishop Jjumba and the diocese on why they detained Fr Ssekabira to prevent unrest and fear among the Church and followers," said Mpuuga.
In an apologetic tone, Deputy Masaka resident city commissioner Teopista Mugera called for calm, saying the case will accordingly be handled fairly in the courts of law.
Meanwhile, in his message, Jjumba called for the promotion of tree planting and environmental protection. He also asked the people and leaders of Masaka to implement proper sanitation and garbage management.
