The Anti-Corruption Court in Nakasero has dismissed a case filed by a lawyer seeking to privately prosecute the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among.

In a ruling delivered on February 19, 2025, by the current Chief Magistrate, Rachael Nakyazze, the former Chief Magistrate, Joan Aciro, dismissed the money laundering charge filed by Hassan Male Mabirizi.

Mabirizi had sought the prosecution of Speaker Among as a private prosecutor; however, the court ruled that there was no evidence to support the case.

Aciro stated that the police report relied upon by Mabirizi was insufficient to conclude that Speaker Among acquired the property illicitly.

“The content of the report by the police as seen is self-explanatory. The report does not disclose evidence that points to the property having been the proceeds of crimes. There is no evidence pointing to the commission of the offence of corruption,” Aciro said.

According to Aciro, after reviewing the report from the Police Economic Crime Department, she found no evidence to support the allegations. Instead, she stated that the report exonerates the Speaker, noting that she is capable of acquiring the properties as she is gainfully employed.

“It is apparent that the intended accused has a history of gainful employment. In other words, she has earned income, salary, and benefits from rendering services in various positions and also has other lawful and credible sources of income,” Aciro said.

Mabirizi had alleged that the Speaker allegedly acquired several properties within the country illicitly, yet she knew that the properties were proceeds of crime.
