The Chinese government has congratulated Ugandans on marking the 63rd Independence anniversary, commending the country’s remarkable progress since independence.
“China and Uganda share a long-standing traditional friendship and a sound, stable partnership based on mutual respect, equality, and win-win cooperation,” Ambassador Lei Kezhong, the director of the Department of African Affairs at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, says.
Kezhong made the remarks during Independence anniversary celebrations at Uganda’s embassy in Beijing. The event was held in partnership with the Uganda consulate in Guangzhou.
The celebrations highlighted cultural diplomacy, trade, and tourism, while reaffirming the deepening partnership between Uganda and China.
The colourful event in Beijing drew diplomats, business leaders, and members of the Ugandan diaspora, reflecting the growing friendship between the two nations.
Head of mission at the embassy, Oliver Wonekha, and Consul General of Uganda in Guangzhou, covering the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan and Guangxi, Judyth Nsababera welcomed chief guest Kezhong, African diplomats, the Ugandan diaspora and Chinese investors.

He noted that over the years, co-operation between the two countries has deepened in key areas including trade, infrastructure, education, and public health, bringing tangible benefits to both peoples. Ambassador Lei reaffirmed China’s readiness to work hand in hand with Uganda to advance bilateral relations under the frameworks of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
“China stands ready to continue working with Uganda to build a community with a shared future for humanity and create a brighter future for our two nations,” he stated before proposing a goodwill toast to Uganda’s 63rd Independence.
Wonekha celebrated Uganda’s journey of steady growth and resilience over six decades. She reiterated Uganda’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with China through enhanced trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.
“This celebration is not just about our past; it is a statement of our future. Uganda is open for business, open for tourism, and proud to share its unique story with the world,” she said, expressing gratitude for China’s enduring friendship and support.
Tourism and coffee promotion As part of the festivities, the embassy organised a Tourism and Coffee Promotion event at the Badaling Great Wall, one of China’s most iconic landmarks, under the theme “Discover Uganda – The Pearl of Africa.”

The showcase featured a Ugandan coffee tasting experience, exhibitions of Ugandan-made products, and an energetic performance by a Ugandan cultural troupe that captivated the audience with traditional music and dance.
Guests praised Uganda’s rich cultural diversity, natural beauty, and investment potential, describing the event as a compelling example of how cultural diplomacy can strengthen global partnerships.
The celebration concluded with a networking reception, during which participants discussed opportunities for greater cooperation in tourism, education, and trade.
The Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Uganda as a premier destination for tourism and investment, while fostering stronger people-to-people ties between Uganda and China.
