CDF Kainerugaba hails security over swift arrest of Matovu murder suspects

The Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has hailed security agencies for the swift arrest of the prime suspect in the murder of legendary Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu.
In a post on his X account on Friday, Gen. Muhoozi thanked all security forces working under the inter-agency security architecture for quickly apprehending the suspect in the murder that rocked the e nation.
“I want to thank all security forces working under the inter-agency security architecture for quickly apprehending the prime suspect in the murder of legendary musician Moses Matovu. The suspect, Arnold Nsamba aka Sitenda, is in our custody. He will face the law and justice will be served,” said Gen. Muhoozi.
Matovu, 75, one of the founding members of Uganda's longest surviving band, Afrigo Band, died on September 24, 2026, succumbing to injuries sustained during an attack at Kibuli Market Zone, Kampala.
He was attacked after he intervened during a scuffle that had ensued between Rose Tumusiime, who had hosted him at her rental in the same area, and estranged jilted lover Nsamba.
Witnesses report that Nsamba fled the scene after assaulting Matovu. He later succumbed to his injuries at Kibuli Hospital, where he had been rushed by a boda boda rider.

Witnesses report that Nsamba fled the scene after assaulting Matovu. He later succumbed to his injuries at Kibuli Hospital, where he had been rushed by a boda boda rider.
A few hours later, Nsamba was arrested in an intelligence-led operation in Ocheng ward, Yesu Amala, Nansana division, Wakiso district. Both Tumusiime and Nsamba remain in police custody.
Afrigo Band, in a statement, said the band had lost its pillar. “Moses was not just our leader; he was our father, our teacher, our compass. He kept Afrigo alive through all seasons for 50 years. We are devastated,” the band said.
Frank Ssebagenda, a close associate of Afrigo Band, said the family is relieved that a suspect is in custody.
“We thank the CDF and all security agencies for acting quickly. Mzee Matovu deserved better. He was a peaceful man who gave his life to music. We want justice, and we want the full truth about what happened that morning,” he said.
