The National Identification and Registration Authority Expo at Kololo Independence Grounds is discussing several matters, especially the importance of registering citizens.
Organised by NIRA, the expo has been sponsored by Bank of Uganda, New Vision, NITA-U, Uganda Security Printing Corporation, Kampala Capital City Authority and Tahafula.
During a session whose panellists consisted of Uganda Security Printing Corporation, Uganda Communications Commission, NITA-U and Utel personnel, they broached the topical question of Artificial Intelligence and its impact on identity safety and registration.
Emmanuel Wamala, the customer relations manager at Utel, acknowledged that AI is a pertinent part of today and cannot be escaped.
“AI is here with us; there is no way we can run away from it. We should find ways to integrate it and leverage it to quickly identify customers and fraudulent customers,” he said.
Although AI is important, it is not without its challenges. UCC’s manager of digital services development, Aloysius Wasago Muheki, also highlighted the challenges AI poses.
“All good things come with challenges,” he said. Wasago gave the example of deepfakes, where someone can’t tell the difference between AI and a real picture.
He also raised phishing as a challenge, which involves notorious people profiling you and threatening you with SIM card de-registration.
With the AI hype raging on globally, some feel that natural intelligence should not be ignored either.
Abdul Nsubuga, projects implementation manager, Uganda Security Printing Corporation, said they chose to use AI alongside NI (natural intelligence).
“We use AI responsibly like other people. We are still pushing AI in line with NI. So, we promote both; we use both AI in support of our intelligence,” he said.
Being a security printing organisation, we do a lot of original designs as every client comes with their specific, unique security features. So, by using AI, we shall be quickly turning a thought into a product, but without losing our AI,” Nsubuga explained.
