BUNYORO - Leaders of different clans in Bunyoro Kitara have been urged to mobilise the kingdom's subjects for wealth creation and preservation of culture.
Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Royal Commission chairperson Dr Fred Kabagambe Kaliisa Ateenyi says clan leaders have a big role in mobilising the subject for social, cultural and economic development.
Kabagambe, who doubles as Special Presidential Advisor on Oil and Gas, commended clan leaders and county chiefs for their continued efforts to mobilise communities and strengthen cultural structures across the kingdom.
He reminded the clan leaders that as they mobilise the Kingdom subjects on cultural aspects, they should also engage communities in wealth creation by encouraging them to embrace government programs to fight poverty, such as the Parish Development Model and Emyooga, among others.
He was addressing 38 clan leaders during an engagement meeting organised by kingdom premier Andrew Byakutaga to update them on the entity's programmes and affairs.
He said in 2014, Omukama Dr Solomon Gafabusa Iguru directed that all clans in the Kingdom be registered and that out of over 100 clans, 38 clans have been registered.
However, he emphasised the need for renewed efforts to ensure that all clans are registered to ensure that they get integrated into the Kingdom’s programmes.
He also advised registered clans to establish functional committees to strengthen coordination, planning, and effective participation in the kingdom's initiatives, including coffee and soybean growing campaigns, education and sports programmes.
Byakutaga commended the clan leaders and county chiefs for responding to Omukama’s call to register and mobilise for development and cultural preservation.
He explained that the registration of clans is intended to streamline leadership structures, strengthen mobilisation for development initiatives, support education and justice systems, reinforce cultural responsibilities, and position clans at the core of Kingdom programmes.
He noted that recently the Kingdom launched a campaign to promote coffee and soybean growing, and this message to reach the subjects, the leadership structures of the clans must be strict.
He added that promotion of culture and norms of the kingdom is primarily a role of clans, and this cannot be achieved without having organised clan leaders.
He added that in order to enhance coordination and data-driven planning, the Kingdom, with support from Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), has distributed tablets to all registered clan leaders and county chiefs.
