A tragic road crash on Saturday, April 5, along the Fort Portal–Bundibugyo Highway left four people dead, and several others injured.
The crash involved a Toyota Land Cruiser, registration number UBB 962Y.
According to Rwenzori West Police spokesperson, Vicent Twesige, the vehicle was travelling from Fort Portal towards Bundibugyo town.
Upon reaching Burondo I village in Burondo sub-county, Bundibugyo district, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road to the right, and knocked two members of the same family who were standing by the roadside.
Twesigye further revealed that the vehicle continued and rammed into a house, killing a woman and her three-year-old child who were inside.
Police identified the deceased as Bonefens Murengwa (40), Rashid Bwambale (33), Desire Kobusingye (25), and Zabron Batwa (3).
The driver is currently on the run, according to police. The bodies were taken to Bundibugyo Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy," said Twesige, "Our thoughts are with the victims' families and all those affected."
The accident has reignited debate over the state of road infrastructure and safety measures in the region. Some locals have called for better signage, improved road conditions, and stricter speed enforcement to prevent future incidents.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the crash.
