Two killed in Nakasongola crash

Two people have been killed and four others severely injured in a road crash after a vehicle they were travelling in lost control in Nakasongola district.

Savannah Police region spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima said the crash involved motor vehicle registration number LG 0072087, a silver Toyota Hilux belonging to Nakasongola District Local Government.

The crash, according to Twiineamazima, occurred on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at approximately 3:30am on Wabigalo Road in Nakasongola.

"The vehicle was travelling from Nakasongola towards Wabigalo trading centre at high speed, failed to negotiate a corner, lost control, went off the road, struck a nearby building fence, and overturned,” Twiineamazima says in the statement released late yesterday.

He identified the deceased as Ivan Mwebaza, 32, a driver for the district and a one Stella female adult, while the injured include Rogers Orech, Joshua Mugabi, Faridah Mukanambala and Daphine.

“Police responded promptly, visited the scene, and developed a sketch plan. The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Nakasongola Health Centre IV mortuary pending post-mortem examination. The injured victims were rushed to the same facility for medical attention,” Twiineamazima says.

He adds that the motor vehicle involved was towed to Nakasongola Police Station yard pending inspection.

According to the 2024 Annual Crime report released by Police in February this year, there was a 19.2% decrease in common offences registered by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety countrywide from 528,025 cases registered in 2023 to 426,432 cases in 2024.

The report showed 5,144 Ugandans died in traffic crashes in 2024, translating to 14 daily deaths. This was an increase compared to 4,806 people who perished in road crashes in 2023, and this translated to 13 road deaths every day.

There were 25,808 casualties from road crashes in 2024 compared to 24,728 in 2023, giving a 4.4% increase in the number of casualties. More crashes were reported to have occurred during day time than at night.
