At least three passengers have been confirmed dead and four others injured following a road crash involving a Trinity bus registration number RAT 597K, along the Mbarara–Kabale Highway in Rukiga district.

The crash occurred at Bukinda, Kakatunda, at about 2:30am, when the bus reportedly veered off the road and slid into a deep-water trench.

Kigezi Police region spokesperson Elly Maate said the bus was travelling from the capital city of Rwanda, Kigali to Kampala when the driver lost control while negotiating a slope. Preliminary investigations indicate that speeding caused the crash.

Police have identified the deceased as Lubwama John Herbert, 26, a resident of Kanyanya Village, Kawempe division in Kampala city; Habineza Alfred, 30, a Rwandan national and bus conductor; Gadaffi, also a Rwandan national and bus conductor.

The injured victims include Habiyaremye Ananias, 44, the bus driver, a resident of Rwamagana district in Rwanda; three adult female passengers whose identities are yet to be established.

Police say that as the bus slid into the trench, the door broke while passengers attempted to escape, leading to the crushing of three male passengers on the spot and injuries to four others, including the driver.

Traffic officers, ambulance teams, and other uniformed personnel swiftly responded and managed the scene. The injured were rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital using a health ministry ambulance, while the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Kabale Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

The wreckage was later towed and parked at Rukiga Central Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

The scene was visited by the Kigezi Regional Police Commander(RPC) Wabwire Alex, regional traffic officer Mahad Juma and Rukiga traffic officers led by Rubango J Bosco.
