BUHWEJU - A farmer was killed in a violent confrontation over stolen bananas in Buhweju district on August 31, 2025.
Police identified the deceased as 38-year-old Justus Nuwagira, a resident of Akambugu trading centre in Rwengwe sub-county.
Reports indicate that Nuwagira intercepted his neighbour, 35-year-old Rodgers Nuwagira, carrying bunches of bananas suspected to have been stolen from his plantation.
Rodgers allegedly turned violent, attacking Justus with a sharp object and leaving him unconscious. The victim was rushed to Nsiika Health Centre IV, where he later died.
Police visited the crime scene, recovered exhibits, and arrested Rodgers, who remains in custody. A post-mortem report is expected to confirm the exact cause of death.
Apollo Tayebwa, the Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson, condemned the incident.
“This was an avoidable tragedy. Theft should be resolved through lawful means, not bloodshed. Our investigations are ongoing, and we are committed to securing justice for the victim’s family,” he said.
Rodgers faces murder charges pending further inquiries, according to Tayebwa, who has also revealed that Police have also reminded communities to resolve disputes through legal channels rather than resorting to violence.
