The Bishop of the Evangelical Orthodox Church (EOC) in Uganda, Jacinto Kibuuka, on Tuesday re-appeared in court to answer charges of torture and was further remanded to Luzira Prisons.

The matter was adjourned to September 6, 2022, because Kira Chief Magistrate Roseline Nsenge, who is expected to handle the matter is undergoing induction training at Colline Hotel in Mukono.

Kibuuka is accused of torturing a 14-year-old child (name withheld), a pupil of Christ the King Junior School, Namungoona.

He is battling a charge of aggravated torture, contrary to Section 2 (b) and 5 (a) of the Prevention and Prohibition of Torture Act, 2012. If found guilty, he is liable to life imprisonment.

Police investigations indicate that Kibuuka tortured the boy, claiming he had stolen sh40000.

Two weeks ago, Grade One Magistrate Ivan Seguya read out the charge to Kibuuka, but he refused the latter to plead to the charge, saying he has no powers to handle the matter.

“This court has no jurisdiction to try this offence. Therefore, you will plead to the charge before the Chief Magistrate,” Seguya stated.

Prosecution alleges that on August 22, 2022, Kibuuka inflicted injuries on the boy, causing him grievous harm at Mamre International Prayer Center in Namugongo, Wakiso district.
