“There is a problem of corruption. Ensure that you are very far away from corruption and be ready to process those who get involved in corruption,” said Byakagaba.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, has implored senior police officers to steer clear of corruption.

“There is a problem of corruption. Ensure that you are very far away from corruption and be ready to process those who get involved in corruption,” he told a total of 83 senior police officers who graduated from the Police Senior Command and Staff College in Bwebajja, Wakiso district on August 2, 2024.

They graduated with degrees in various disciplines at a passing-out ceremony that was presided over by internal affairs minister Maj. Gen. (rtd) Kahinda Otafiire.

Byakagaba’s call comes at a crucial time when investigations into a corruption racket within the Ministry of Finance and Parliament are gaining momentum.

The recent arrest and detention of five ruling party MPs have turned the spotlight on the need for greater transparency and accountability within the government.

The IGP also told the graduates that with their dedication and teamwork, they will progress together by building a stronger force, more resilient and more effective and ultimately ready and able to deliver to the people of Uganda.

“I have great confidence in your abilities, go forth, fly [because] the sky is no longer the limit, and make a difference in policing our beautiful country as we aspire to achieve Vision 2040 and the coming NDPIV [National Development Plan]. I wish you a great career in the Force as we protect and serve,” he said.

The NDPIV is the fourth out of the six National Development Plans that are meant to implement Uganda Vision 2040.

It is also the last plan to deliver the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that was adopted by all United Nations member states in 2015. It is also the first within the implementation of the Ugandan government’s strategy for achieving 10-fold growth.

The goal of NDPIV is “to achieve higher household incomes and employment for sustainable socio-economic transformation.”

It is premised on the theme: Sustainable Industrialisation for Inclusive Growth, Employment and Wealth Creation.
