An internal auditor at V.G Keshwala and Sons Limited has been charged with embezzling sh167.1m from the company.
Angella Nakasango, 33, was charged with one count of embezzlement on July 4, 2024, at the Nakasero-based Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala, before Grade One Magistrate Esther Asiimwe.
Nakasango was charged with embezzlement contrary to section 19(b)(iii) of the Anti-Corruption Act, 2019 as amended. The charge of embezzlement attracts 14 years in jail or a fine not exceeding sh6.7m or both upon conviction.
Prosecution’s case
The prosecution, led by Chief State Attorney Nelly Asiku from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, alleges that between January and August 2023, while employed as an internal auditor at V.G Keshwala and Sons Limited in Walukuba West Ward, Southern Division, Jinja district, Nakasango stole sh167m from the company. Nakasango has denied the charge.
Asiimwe remanded her to Luzira Prison until July 9 because she did not have sureties to stand for her release on bail.
Asiku informed the court that inquiries were complete and that the state was ready to proceed with the trial. The prosecution is expected to disclose to Nakasango the documents they will rely on during the trial.
The magistrate advised her to secure substantial sureties in order to apply for bail.
