Two Uganda Liberal Teachers Union (ULTU) Savings and Credit Co-operative Union (SACCO) members accused of defrauding over sh4.1b meant to improve teachers’ welfare are set to appear before Buganda Road Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kampala today (March 6, 2025).

The alleged stolen money was part of the sh6.6b granted to three national teachers’ SACCOs by President Yoweri Museveni to develop themselves.

SACCOS chairperson Evans Mutesasira Kaganizo, 53, is co-accused with ULTU general secretary Hassan Essongwa Maganda, 58, a resident of Nacwesambula B, Baitambogwe sub-county in Mayuge district.

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU) arrested Maganda and Mutesasira, a resident of Katenga zone, Bubimbire sub-county in Bushenyi district.

The duo facing two counts of obtaining money by false pretence and conspiracy to defraud are before chief magistrate Ronald Kayizi who is expected to read them the charges.

Prosecution alleges that Mutesasira, and others still at large, between November and December 2024 in Kampala district with intent to defraud obtained sh1,375,030,100b from ULTU SACCO by falsely pretending that he (Mutesasira) was selling to them 500 acres of land comprised in Block 3 Kabwoya/Kyanwali Sub Counties, whereas not.

It is further purported that Mutesaira, Maganda, and others still at large during the same place and time defrauded ULTU Sacco of sh2,750,000,000 billion by affecting the cost of purchasing 500 acres of land comprised in Block 3 Kabwoya/Kyangwali sub-counties.
