KAMPALA - Police on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, confirmed the arrest of Dr Sarah Bireete, the director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachel Kawaala said in a statement that Bireete was in police custody.
"The Uganda Police Force would like to confirm the arrest of Bireete director for Centre for Constitutional Governance. She is in police custody."
Police added that Bireete would be arraigned before court in due course.
At about 4:00pm, Bireete, using social media platform X, claimed that her home had been surrounded by the army and police.
"My house is under siege by Police and Army," she said.
No official reason was given for her arrest.
However, sources said Bireete was arrested over a series of controversial remarks about the government, made both on social media and during media appearances.
