Among's lawyers rush to parliament as investigators seal off her office

The investigations at parliament followed earlier searches of Among's homes at Kigo in Wakiso district's Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, as well as in Ntinda and Nakasero, both in Kampala, where they impounded several exhibits, including two luxury cars and an unspecified amount of cash.

KAMPALA - Lawyers for the former speaker of parliament, Anita Among, have rushed to parliament after learning that a team of investigators had stormed their client's former office at the August House.

The lawyers led by Caleb Alaka were seen moving hastily to ensure that the search was conducted in their presence.

There was tension as journalists followed the investigators from one office to another, but were later stopped from a distance and tape was put around the offices being searched, categorising them as Scenes of Crime.

The search started at around 9:00am today, May 19, 2026, seemingly catching the staff unaware.

President Yoweri Museveni ordered for a probe into the unexplained wealth of the former Speaker, who is the National Resistance Movement national vice chairperson (female) and Bukedea District Woman MP.

The investigators at parliament, who included officers from the Uganda Police Force's Criminal Investigations Directorate, Forensics directorate, and the army, are tasked to gather evidence, including fingerprints and documents, and were seen picking several exhibits.

The first parliament is slated for May 25 at Kololo Independence Grounds, where the newly elected Members of Parliament are expected to elect a new speaker and deputy.

On Monday, the former speaker declared that she would not offer herself for the speakership race of the 12th parliament.

“I wish to draw the attention of the public to the matters regarding the Speakership race. After wide consultations and deep introspection, and to maintain harmony and clarity in my beloved party, the NRM,  I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament,” she stated in a message she posted on her X page.

She pledged her total support to the candidates who will be endorsed by the President and the Party and implored her colleague MPs to do the same. “I shall remain available to the service of my country as the party and the President may assign me,” she stated.
