HEALTH | MULONDO | BLOOD PRESSURE
KAMPALA - Mulondo, scientifically referred to as mondia whitei, is popular in central Uganda for boosting sexual performance. The more reason why the root is sought after, especially around Valentine's Day.
However, scientists say there is evidence supporting its use as an aphrodisiac and management of impotence. So consuming it is like killing two birds using one stone.
This is because of its high concentration of zinc, a nutrient that boosts testosterone, improving libido and reducing sexual exhaustion for both men and women, notes William Kyamuhangire, an associate professor at Makerere University Food Technology and Bioengineering.
However, there is more to mulondo than just enhancing libido. Kyamuhangire says mulondo decreases blood pressure without interfering with the body’s functionality.
“Mulondo works by thinning blood, that way the blood pressure is reduced for those battling with hypertension,” he notes and is quick to add all you have to do is to chew a mouthful daily.
The root allows blood to flow freely, increasing energy levels. Kyamuhangire adds that mulondo has the ability to control diarrhoea.
Fausta Aketch, a nutritionist based in Adjumani notes that the root also helps improve appetite.
In addition, Patrick Mulimira who trades mulondo in Nakawa market notes that the roots are also popular for their aroma.
“The fleshy bark of the narrow root is eaten raw, occasionally dry, or boiled in tea,” he explains.
Prof. Kyamuhangire, who has researched the root and processed a drink, affirms that mulondo makes a good drink for relaxation.
He adds that though anyone can eat mulondo products, it is not advised to chew fresh roots in large amounts because it tends to numb the tongue.
