TEREGO - The UNCHR has handed to Terego district authorities a new ambulance to strengthen emergency and referral services.

The brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser ambulance with registration number DA203106U handed to the district on Tuesday will offer routine services in three health units, including Ocia, Siripi and Imvepi.

While presenting the vehicle to the district, Paula Viko, UNHCR coordinator for Terego district, cautioned against misuse of the self-sustaining facility in terms of fuel supply.

"Whenever needed, the ambulance should be used under the instruction of the DHO.  I will ensure that the regional coordinator in  Yumbe allocates a fuel coupon,” Viko explained.

The delivery of the fully equipped ambulance was received by joyful crowds who included district leaders.

This is the fourth operational ambulance in the entire district.

Last week, UNHCR withdrew the service ambulance, which had reportedly exceeded the recommended mileage.

The vehicle reportedly covered over 250,000 Km against the recommended threshold distance of 150,000 Km in the agreement.

Terego assistant RDC Rose Munduni, who appreciated UNHCR for maintaining their good partnership, also charged the ambulance driver with the responsibility of strict maintenance and service delivery on behalf of the district.

“The driver must ensure that the ambulance is in the right mechanical condition and report when it is faulty. Also, ensure that you have a good relationship with the expectant mothers, who are the biggest clients,” Munduni directed.

The Chief Administrative Officer of Terego district, Charles Kumaketch Oluba, pledged to follow all the recommendations and guidelines for the usage of the vehicle designated to perform a core role for health service delivery.

“Without an ambulance, referral for specialised treatment to Arua regional referral hospital or other facilities is practically difficult. This brand-new ambulance will make emergency referrals easier and improve our health service delivery indicators; therefore I we shall abide by the right of use and regulations that will safeguard the usage of this ambulance,” Oluba stressed.

However, Terego LC5 chairman Wilfred Saka noted that unless renumeration of the driver is improved, the vehicle will not offer effective service delivery.
