KAMPALA - As Uganda celebrated her 60th Independence anniversary, the sun was dim for seven families in Mubende who lost their lives to Ebola Virus Disease. 

“We last released the situation report on October 6, 2022 when the death toll was 10, but this rose to 17 as of Independence Day (October 9, 2022),” health ministry spokesperson Emma Ayinebyoona told New Vision in an interview on October 11, 2022. 

As of October 9, 2022, cumulative confirmed cases stood at 48, after four new confirmed cases were registered in the last 48 hours.  

Ayinebyoona said most of the people that have died were from Mubende district, which remains the epicentre of Ebola Virus Disease. 

The outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease was declared on September 20 after the death of a 24-year-old resident of Madudu sub-county occurred on September 19, 2022. The disease has spread to the districts of Kassanda, Kyegegwa, Kagadi and Bunyangabu. 

Cumulative confirmed deaths have risen to 17, recoveries 14, health worker infections stand at nine confirmed cases and admissions stand at 15. He also said 35% of the 1,049 cumulative contacts listed have completed their 21 days of follow-up.  

Health minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng is expected to address the country on the Ebola Response today (October 11, 2022) at Entebbe Isolation Centre.
