Police rescue 3-week-old stolen baby stolen in Namutumba

NAMUTUMBA - Police in Busoga East Region have recovered a three-week-old baby girl, who was allegedly stolen after a woman posing as a stranded traveller was given accommodation at the home of the baby's mother in Namutumba District.
The baby, identified as Sherina Namulwa, was recovered alive and in good health on Monday, August 24, from a hideout in Kisiro Village, Bugobi Sub-county, four days after she was allegedly taken from her mother.
Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha said the suspect had been accommodated for a night by Suzan Mirembe at Namulu Village, Kizuba Sub-county, on August 20 after claiming to be a stranded traveller.
On the following day, Kasadha said the suspect disappeared with the complainant’s three-week-old baby. However, Police did not name the suspected baby thief, who has since been arrested.

“The victim was found to be in stable condition and has since been reunited with her biological mother and family,” he said, adding that the suspect was arrested and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Kasadha said the case file is being processed for submission to the Resident State Attorney for perusal and legal advice.
He commended residents and local leaders for providing information that helped police trace the baby, saying community cooperation was critical to the successful recovery.
Police cautioned parents and guardians against trusting strangers with access to their children, particularly people seeking accommodation while claiming to be stranded.
“We strongly warn the public against the vice of child stealing and advise parents and guardians to be vigilant about strangers, especially those who seek accommodation while with infants,” Kasadha said.
