Kwania man jailed 10 years for stealing mother’s Sh1.7m
According to the prosecution, Ebong broke into his mother’s house and took part of the money she had earned from renting out her land.

KWANIA - Aduku Grade One Magistrates’ Court in Kwania District has sentenced a 30-year-old man to 10 years in prison for breaking into his mother’s house and stealing Shs1.7 million.
Ebong Tom, a resident of Barobia Village in Atongtidi Parish, Atongtidi Sub-county, was convicted of stealing the money belonging to his 72-year-old mother, Koli Sophia.
According to the prosecution, Ebong broke into his mother’s house and took part of the money she had earned from renting out her land.
The court also heard that Ebong, who was described by the prosecution as a drug addict, had repeatedly disturbed his mother.
Ebong pleaded guilty to the charges and asked the court for forgiveness.
However, Grade One Magistrate Smith Ogwal sentenced him to five years in prison for housebreaking and an additional five years for theft, bringing the total sentence to 10 years.
“You will serve five years for housebreaking and another five years for theft. However, you have the right to appeal if you are dissatisfied with this ruling,” Magistrate Ogwal said.
Ebong was immediately taken to Kwania Government Prison to begin serving his sentence.
Mother welcomes sentence
Speaking to journalists after the ruling, Koli welcomed the sentence, saying her son had terrorised her for a long time.
“You will serve five years for housebreaking and another five years for theft. However, you have the right to appeal if you are dissatisfied with this ruling,” Magistrate Ogwal said.
Ebong was immediately taken to Kwania Government Prison to begin serving his sentence.
Mother welcomes sentence
Speaking to journalists after the ruling, Koli welcomed the sentence, saying her son had terrorised her for a long time.
“I am happy that the magistrate served my interests. I requested this sentence because this boy had been disturbing me for a long time. He stole my cow and household items. This should serve as a lesson to youths who terrorise communities, including their parents,” she said.
Seven UPC supporters remanded
In a related development, the same court has remanded seven Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) supporters accused of causing chaos during the recently concluded LC2 elections.
Police at Kwania Central Police Station arrested the suspects between August 10 and 13 following clashes between UPC and National Resistance Movement supporters in Apire Parish, Aduku Sub-county.
The violence allegedly left Kwania District Police Commander Paul Kadogo and Deputy Resident District Commissioner Aturu Abraham injured. Four other residents were also reportedly shot.
The suspects are Ebong Tom of Alongo Omula Village; Otoo Samuel, Waca Nelson, Ogwal Dickens and Ongol Jacob, all residents of Apire A Village; Otim Tony of Angolenyang Village; and Oruru of Teopok Village.
They were remanded to Kwania Government Prison until August 20, 2026, when they are expected to return to court for mention of the case.
