The Police in Gulu city have arrested a 13-year-old female pupil hailing from a nursery and primary school.

The suspect, a South Sudanese national, stands accused of the murder of a fellow pupil and countrymate, Tracy Nyatrich,14. Both pupils resided in the boarding section of the school.

According to preliminary investigations, a quarrel erupted between the two pupils while fetching water.

In a tragic escalation of events, the prime suspect allegedly seized Nyatrich by the neck, strangling her in a fit of rage.

Subsequently, she forcibly pushed Nyatrich, causing her to fall heavily to the ground and lose consciousness. Despite efforts to save her, Nyatrich was pronounced dead upon arrival at St Mary’s Hospital Lacor, according to Police spokesperson Fred Enanga.

According to Enanga, the senseless loss of Nyatrich has sent shockwaves through the community and heartfelt condolences pour in for her grieving family, friends and schoolmates.

According to Enanga, the prime suspect has been apprehended and faces charges for her reckless and brutal actions.

“While sympathy is extended to the young girl, the gravity of her alleged crime cannot be understated. The act of strangling her fellow pupil and withholding her neck exhibits a level of brutality that is deeply troubling," Enanga said during the weekly joint security briefing at Police headquarters in Kampala on Monday.

In light of this tragic incident, authorities emphasize the importance of heightened vigilance and supervision within school environments. School administrators are urged to ensure the presence of adequate staff to prevent and address acts of violence, safeguarding the well-being of all students.
