Brenda Cathy Nalwoga, 29, the only female suspect among those accused of murdering lawyer Ronnie Mukisa has sought bail before the General Court Martial (GCM) at Makindye in Kampala.

Through lawyer Elizabeth Nyasingwa, Nalwoga currently incarcerated at Luzira Women's Prison sought bail on grounds that she has substantial sureties, a fixed place of abode, and that the same is her constitutional right.

Mukisa was gunned down on May 30, at 11:00 pm, while at his home in Kitiko-Birongo, Ndejje division in Wakiso district.

Six people including Nalwoga have since been arrested, charged, and respectively remanded at Luzira Prison and Makindye Military Police Quarter Guard, battling murder charges.

Among the accused are Nalwoga’s husband, Robert Irama Kareodu, 50, both residents of Kisasi, and Superintendent of Police Vincent Irama Urri, 45, whom the GCM has denied bail twice, on grounds that he will interfere with state investigations.

Others are army officers Corporal Geoffrey Mark Anyesa, 51, a resident of Kisasi, Kulambiro in Nakawa division in Kampala; Sergeant Rashid Ayup Okot, 33, aboding at Kafunda Kazo, Nabweru in Nansana municipality, Wakiso district and Mzee Josebert Hayeza, 51.

Among the accused, Nalwoga is the second suspect among the six accused to seek bail after Irama, whose two attempts to have temporary freedom from the same court were all dismissed on grounds that he is a flight risk and will interfere with Police investigations, given his seniority in the Police Force.

Nalwoga’s sureties included her grandfather, Yowasi Kizza Kitungulu; Christine Nakitende, her grandmother; Juliet Nakintu, her mother and businesswoman and her elder brother, Derrick Muyanja Ssenyonga, a medical officer.

All the sureties abode at Kaabale Kanisa Zone local council 1, Kataabi town council in Wakiso.

“My lord chairman and honourable court members, we pray that the court finds the sureties substantial and grant the accused bail on reasonable terms,” Nyasingwa submitted on April 22, 2024.

In response, the state prosecutors, Lt. Col. Raphael Mugisha, and Lt Alex Mukhwana requested the GCM to adjourn the case to enable them to verify the sureties’ documents tendered in court.

“We seek an adjournment to enable us to respond to the applicant’s bail application appropriately,” Mukhwana said.

This prompted the GCM chairperson Brig. Gen. Robert Freeman Mugabe to adjourn the case to May 16, 2024, for the state to respond to the accused’s bail application.

The prosecution alleges that Irama, Anyase, Ayubu, Hayeza, Kareodu, and Nalwoga on or around May 30, 2023, at about 2300 hours at Katiko in Wakiso, with malice aforethought, unlawfully caused the death of Mukisa.
