Afrigo Band vows to honour bookings after Moses Matovu’s death

Afrigo Band has assured its clients and fans that the show will go on, despite the death of its founder and longtime leader, Moses Matovu.

The band says it will honour all existing bookings and continue with its scheduled performances, as it seeks to preserve the legacy of the legendary musician who died on September 24, 2026.

Matovu, the founder and lead act of Afrigo Band, was buried last week following his death, which sent shockwaves through Uganda’s music fraternity.

His death also left fans wondering what the future holds for Afrigo, one of Uganda’s longest-running and most celebrated bands.

However, the band’s management, led by James Wasula, has moved to reassure clients, corporate partners and fans that Afrigo remains intact and operational.

In a statement, management said all existing bookings would be honoured as scheduled.

“Management wishes to inform all our esteemed clients, corporate partners, fans, and the general public who have existing bookings with Afrigo Band that all bookings shall be honoured,” the statement reads.

The band added that it remains committed to delivering the quality performances that have made Afrigo a household name over the decades.

“Do not lose heart. Matovu laid a firm foundation for 50 years. The discipline, talent and values he instilled in the band remain intact,” management said.

The message comes at a crucial moment for the band, which is grappling with the loss of the man who not only founded Afrigo but also became synonymous with its sound, identity and longevity.

For generations of Ugandans, Matovu was more than a bandleader. He was the face and voice of a musical institution that survived changing tastes, generations of musicians and the rise of new forms of entertainment.

Afrigo’s decision to continue with its engagements signals an effort to ensure that Matovu’s work does not end with his death.

Rather, the band says, his legacy will live on through the music, discipline and professional standards he instilled in the musicians who shared his journey.

As Afrigo returns to the stage, its performances are likely to carry a new emotional weight — with every note serving as a reminder of the man who built the band and kept it playing for decades.
